HUMAN RIGHT COMMITTEE

Lillie Cooper , recently appointed Conductor/Sentinel from our Barstow FO, will be attending the Human Rights Seminar in May 2008. Lillie will be heading up our Human Rights Committee. The committee will be responsible for the following:

• Becoming a constructive and pro-active force for Human Rights in our local.
• Become involved in the legislative process and encourage others to do the same.
• Encourage organizing among under-represented workers to grow the Union.
• Encourage inclusion and participation of diverse groups of members that may have never been encouraged to be involved in their locals by systematically identifying and removing the barriers to participation and involvement.
• Being an effective and vigorous advocate for diversity, mutual respect, fairness, and equality in the workplace and in the Union and from like-minded groups and agencies.
• Raise awareness and visibility of human rights issues in the local lodge.
• Develop effective intervention strategies and skills when confronted with a work place harassment or diversity problem or complaint.
• Investigate human rights issues within CA-BLM.

This should be a committee of at least 3 employees. Meetings between committee members will be arranged based on the best method developed between the committee members. If you want to see our local get more involved in protecting human rights - this is your opportunity.

We need to know what issues are important to you! We need to be writing letters to our legislation asking for better health benefits, better maternity benefits similar to the state of California, health care for life partners, etc. We encourage all members to get involved and step up to the plate.
