You don't HAVE to be a dues paying member to get effective Union representation.
Actually, there are a lot of things you don't HAVE to do.
You don't HAVE to vote in elections to live in a free country.
You don't HAVE to give blood to get blood.
You don't HAVE to give a decent tip after you get better than decent service.
You don't HAVE to be a good neighbor to live in a good neighborhood.
People don't really HAVE to do any of these things. But aren't we all better off because they DO?
Maybe it's in their enlightened self-interest. Maybe it's their community spirit. Probably it's a bit of both. The fact is, EVERYONE BENEFITS WHEN CARING PEOPLE TAKE ACTION.
They are not cynics. They are, however, precisely the kind of people who are dues-paying members in right-to-work states and federal sector unions. Workers who understand that DUES PAYING MEMBERS MAKE EFFECTIVE UNION REPRESENTATION POSSIBLE.

Remember, you don't HAVE to join to be represented, but you do have to join to ensure that you and your fellow employees will continue to enjoy the benefits of effective Union representation well into the future. Our union strength depends on how many members we have. We are the checks and balances to keep them honest, keep it fair, and to follow the law. Otherwise, they do what they want to and get away with it.
The monthly cost of being a paying member is cheaper then your daily cup of coffee and that is a low cost to protect your rights on the job.
